Back-to-school time is upon us. Busy parents all over the country are looking for the best back-to-school deals on clothes, shoes and supplies. In addition to saving money, health-conscious moms and dads are wanting healthy lunch and snack ideas that they can be confident in feeding to their children. I happen to be one of those moms.

Having a son on the Autism spectrum, I became really quite conscientious about the foods I feed my children. I stay away from foods full of the normal demons; like additives, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors and nitrates, and I work hard to exclude foods with high fructose corn syrup and GMOs.

Beanitos®, The Original Bean Chips™, launched in January 2010 and the brainchild of brothers Doug and Dave Foreman, are a new healthy to-go snack that you can give to your children with confidence. Non-GMO and gluten-free, they are made from pinto and black beans, naturally lending to the protein and fiber (6g of each) that is important to keeping their little bodies healthy. In 1.25 oz bags, they are perfectly sized to include in your child’s lunch bag or served as an after-school snack.

When our box of Beanitos arrived we were so excited to try them that I prepared a batch of hummus specifically to celebrate the occasion.

The simplicity of the Black Bean Chips and the Pinto Bean & Flax Chips are wonderful alone or served with your favorite salsa or dip. The children and I enjoyed them very much with the hummus and on another occasion, fresh salsa.

For those with a love of chips with a kick, the Chipotle BBQ Black Bean Chips are for you. My husband, who can handle the heat, really appreciated the flavor in addition to the heat and was surprised that he liked them as much as he did because he it the one in the family that balks at bean recipes.

But I have to say my personal favorite are the Cheddar Cheese Pinto & Flax Chips. I am a big fan of the health benefits of flax as it is and to have it so nicely included in a quick snack makes it all the better. The Cheddar Cheese flavored chips have the perfect amount of flavoring without being overwhelming. That means alot to me as I am NOT a chip fan in general, only partaking a few times a year. I really enjoy the wee bit of spice on the backside of the bite of these chips. Very nice.

Outside of the healthful benefits of eating a chip made with beans and non-GMO ingredients, it’s really nice to have a chip that is certified to be low glycemic. Battling Hypoglycemia since I was a child and having children with similar issues, it is important to me to know that we can eat a snack that is not going to spike our blood sugar levels. Coupled with the lovely flavor of the chips, that makes them beyond perfect for a great to-go snack for kids!

And guess what? They are Kosher too!  Loving that!

If you are looking for a healthy back-to-school snack for your children, give Beanitos a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by how good these chips are! You can order Beanitos online or find them in a store near you.
